Fort Campbell -- Lettuce Eat

A few men unloading boxes of lettuce into the Marshall Elementary School cafeteria might not seem unusual. After all, the nine Department of Defense Education Activity schools on Fort Campbell serve lunch to hundreds of students per day.
However, the Tuesday morning delivery signaled a new step for the installation as the lettuce became the first produce to arrive as part of the Farm to School program. Farm to School is slowly catching on across the country, and it serves as a way to bring local food products to cafeteria plates. With Fort Campbell heavily focused on promoting healthy and active lifestyles throughout 2013, this program allows post schools find to combat an ever-increasing problem: childhood obesity.
It also works in concert with the schools' participation in the USDA's HealthierUS School Challenge, which encourages healthier diets and increased activity. Farm to School at Fort Campbell came about after Food Services Director Jarrett Rogers first came to the position in 2011.
"I was very excited about it, because I knew the opportunities that we could receive from it and the benefits that we could receive from the Farm to School," Rogers explained about the program, which he first learned about during a Kentucky Department of Agriculture conference.
