Growing up, most children are taught that it is not always about receiving, it's about the gift of giving. While that goes in one ear and out the other to some, it sticks in the minds of others.
Fort Campbell's Child Youth & School Services held a Youth Ceremony April 11, at Cole Park Commons to honor the teens that have devoted their time to volunteering within the community.
These honorees received honorary words of wisdom from local leaders such as Col. David "Buck" Dellinger, Garrison commander, and Robert E. Vail, Director Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation, among many others, as well as a special performance from the Exit One show choir from Northeast High School.
More than 130 plaques and awards were given to honor teens who have volunteered for at least 20 hours. Rashad McQueen, a West Creek High School senior, was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year for his work in the community. McQueen had the most volunteer hours at 112.
"It is important for teens to know it's not always about receiving, it's about giving back to others community," said Pearl Starks, Teen Club sponsor.
"I volunteer at any event sponsored by MWR, I have volunteered with places like the Kelly Clarkson concert, I feel floored when I know I am helping somebody else instead of caring for myself all the time," said Alexcia Moore, Teen Club volunteer and Fort Campbell High School student.
A person who has volunteered knows that you gain so many values from helping others. "Volunteering has had such a great impact on me," said Jyire Smith, Teen Club volunteer and FCHS student.
"It taught me to grow up, and become a leader."
