Falcons' grappling goals

Young, fresh faces to lead FCHS wrestling team this season

Fort Campbell | December 1, 2017

Fort Campbell High School Falcons wrestling team members are gearing up for their first meet of the season Saturday.

Although the team is comprised of young, new talent, the members are striving for a successful season.

They have high expectations for this year, said FCHS head coach Anthony Shingler.

“I still want the team to carry themselves with a high regard,” Shingler said. “Whether they are new or old, I am ensuring that our team philosophy is being instilled in them.”

The team is moving forward after losing several key wrestlers from last season including state qualifiers Louis Regalado, David Nikolao and Rey Vela.

Shingler said losing them was tough, but he has high hopes for the talented wrestlers who are part of the team this year.

“We have a very hungry team [they are] excited to be on the team and want to achieve the goals they have for themselves as well as achieving team goals,” he said.

The Falcons wrestling team still has leaders who will build up the next class of wrestlers. Shingler is hopeful that they will be able to mentor the younger wrestlers and get them going in the right direction.

“Since we have a young group, we are relying on returning wrestlers, who know how we do things in practice and during meets, to lead the team and show the new guys and tell what needs to be done,” Shingler said.

The Falcons are returning two wrestlers from last year’s team, freshman Ethan Tomerlin and sophomore Jesus Avila. Both wrestlers competed at regionals, Avila placed sixth in the 182-pound weight class and Tomerlin took third place and qualified for state at the 170-pound weight class.

Tomerlin finished with a 1-2 record at state last year, which is one of the things he would like to change this year.

“I want to get first or second at regionals to get a high seeding at the state competition and then of course win or place at state,” Tomerlin said.

Tomerlin is considered a leader for the team this year after being a previous state qualifier, but he wants to make sure he is a member of the team first.

“I don’t want the new guys to see me as a coach,” he said. “I want them to understand that we are all on the same level. I want to be a good teammate and then a good teacher and leader.” In order for the team to have a successful season, everyone will have to be invested in getting better, Tomerlin said.

“When everyone on the team is giving the best effort they can, there’s nothing we cannot achieve,” he said.

Shingler said Tomerlin and Avila are the leaders for the upper weight class wrestlers and newcomer Alexi Royar is leading the lightweights.

“I believe in the leaders we have, even though Alexi is a new guy he has good leadership qualities,” he said.

Freshman newcomer Royar said the team comes first in his mind, as he sets his sights on regionals and state.

“I want the team to do well this season and I know we have the ability,” Royar said. “I have goals for myself, but our team goals is extremely important.”

The team has shown progress during the preseason, Shingler said. The team is more than prepared for the Reitz Hill Classic Saturday.

“We are ready to get the season started and see what happens,” Tomerlin said.
