FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Fort Campbell High school will soon be in search of a new football coach.

On Wednesday, coach Josh McKillip resigned from his position as head coach of the Falcons.

McKillip, who’s been the head coach of Fort Campbell for two years, announced his resignation via email.

The emails reads as follows:

“It is with great sadness that I announce that I have resigned my position as Head Football Coach at Fort Campbell High School.

It has been an honor to serve my Alma mater as a football coach here at Ft. Campbell High School for the past 15 years and as the Head Coach for the past two years, which makes this such a hard decision for me.

Year-in and year-out, I have always maintained a set of conditions that had to be met for me to remain in a coaching position here, which are: 1) a mutual respect between me and the players, 2) a mutual respect between me and the other coaches, 3) full support from all my family members, and 4) a system-wide commitment to winning/ program building. Not all of these conditions are currently being met, nor do I envision them changing in the near future; therefore, I can no longer justify the time spent away from my family.

I am extremely thankful for the opportunities provided for me from FCHS, the relationships that have been forged through the development of this football program, and the trust the soldiers and family members in the Ft. Campbell community placed in me to lead their young men. This will be my only comment as I move forward to new challenges and finding new ways to make a difference in our society.”

McKillip, who was a Fort Campbell graduate, was an assistant coach under Shawn Berner from 2002 through 2012 including the three state championships. McKillip joined Berner’s staff in 2002 as a linebacker and special teams coordinator, and eventually became the defensive coordinator in 2007.

“Josh is one of the best coaches I’ve ever been around,” former coach Shawn Berner said. “I know it meant a lot to him to be the head coach at his Alma mater, and was proud that being the head coach was his service to the military community.”
