March 14 marked Faith Middle School’s annual Partner in Education Day. The Directorate of Emergency Services and 209th Military Police Company, which worked with DES during PIE Day, spent the entire school day with the students.

“PIE Day offers a fun way for our faculty and staff to interact with the people that provide so much support throughout the year,” said Kristy Griffin, PIE coordinator at Faith.

Activities included a bucket brigade relay, military working dog demonstrations and basketball pitting students against faculty, staff and PIE partners. The PIE partners also treated students to hamburgers.

Johniqua Woods, a seventh-grader on the girl’s basketball team, was one of the student’s to participate in her grade’s basketball game against the adults. She said she appreciated her PIE partners taking time out of their day to be with students and it helped her improve her basketball skills.

“It gives me the chance to play better … going against them,” she said.

Besides participating in activities with students on PIE Day, Sgt. 1st Class Larry Montgomery with the 209th Military Police Company said they also sit down with the students and “talk about life values.”

He said it was good for students to see the military police outside of their normal jobs so that they aren’t afraid to approach them.

“They see us patrolling and they never really see us doing anything else outside of being MP,” he said. Griffin said she was grateful for the partners’ work.

“The public support of our PIE partners shows our kids that the community cares about education and about their academic success, as well as their success as adults,” Griffin said. “It also gives our students and faculty a better understanding of the services provided by the Directorate of Emergency Services. With a school our size, it takes an immense amount of work to make activities like this possible, but the results are well worth the effort. Our students had a blast.”
