Continuous School Improvement - Assessment

DoDEA uses a balanced assessment system to drive the Continuous School Improvement (CSI) process and help each student succeed.  


DoDEA System-wide Assessments

System-wide data is used in monitoring student achievement and evaluating system-wide progress toward the goals of the DoDEA Community Strategic Plan. One of the most common types of assessment used in schools is the standardized test. The term, "standardized tests," means that these tests are always administered with the same directions and time limits, and are always scored the same way, to ensure fairness for all students. Standardized testing results are:

  • Used by educators to help improve teaching and learning and to evaluate programs and schools.
  • Used to generate the data on which policy decisions are made.
  • Influences on the public's perception about the quality of our schools. 

Both norm-referenced and criterion-referenced achievement tests are administered in DoDEA. In addition to promoting accountability, assessments of student achievement provide valuable data that can be analyzed to: 

  • Improve instruction
  • Measure program success and effectiveness
  • Guide curriculum development and revision.

System-wide Assessment Matrix: Lists the standardized tests used system-wide, the grade levels tested, and the time frame in which the tests are given.

Our accrediting agency, NCA CASI, is part of the unified organization AdvancED who's focus is to help member schools continually improve student performance and school conditions. Their accreditation standards and process are based on:

  • ongoing self-assessment against quality standards,
  • rigorous on-site evaluation, and
  • continuous improvement.

Elementary School Goals

Measurement:  All students will improve their measurement skills across the curriculum.

Writing Strategies:  Elementary students will improve their abilities to write in an organized, grade-level appropriate manner.

Middle School Goals

Measurement:  All students will improve their measurement skills across the curriculum.

Reading:  Middle School students will improve their ability to evaluate and extend meaning of text.
