PEACHTREE CITY, GA — April 16, 2014 — Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, Interim Director for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)-Cuba, announced today that Frances Austin has been named Deputy Director of Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment (CIA), at the DDESS Area Service Center (ASC) in Peachtree City, GA.
Dr. Austin has most recently served as the acting Deputy Director of CIA since September 2013, supervising and monitoring all DDESS Area Pre-Kindergarten-Grade 12 programs. Prior to that she had served as the Assistant Deputy Director for CIA since January 2012. She came to the ASC as an Instructional Systems Specialist (ISS) in support of leadership, mathematics, social studies and early childhood education. Dr. Austin's career includes three Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS) overseas assignments in England, Turkey and Sicily with service as a gifted education teacher and an administrator. Before joining the Department of Defense Schools, she taught in the public school systems in North and South Carolina.
"Dr Austin's experience at the district, area and headquarters' levels working with the military community, parents, administrators and teachers will serve her well in her new role," said Dr. Middlemiss. "She is a dedicated professional. I look forward to the contributions she will bring to DDESS in this new assignment."
Dr. Frances Austin is a native of North Carolina. She earned a Bachelor's of Art Degree in Elementary Education from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. She graduated from Winthrop University with a Master's Degree in Educational Administration and Instruction, and earned a Doctorate Degree in Educational Administration from Oklahoma State University.
Dr. Austin is married to Sebastian Parreirinha, who is a DDESS teacher at Faith Middle School, Fort Benning, GA. Dr. Austin has one son, Chris, a daughter-in-law, Cyndi, and two grandchildren, Quinton and Jessica.
