PEACHTREE CITY, GA — June 27, 2014 — Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, Interim Director for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)-Cuba, announced today that Ms. Edwina Smith has been named principal of Dexter Elementary School, at Fort Benning, in the Georgia/Alabama District. She came to the Georgia/Alabama District as an assistant principal at Faith Middle School in 2013.
Ms. Smith came to DDESS from the Pacific where she had served as an assistant principal since 2010. She has served DoDEA at the Virtual School in Okinawa, Japan; Sullivan Elementary in Yokosuka, Japan; Giessen Middle/High School in Giessen, Germany; and Pirmasens Elementary/Middle School in Pirmasens, Germany.
"I am thrilled to have Ms. Smith as the new principal for Dexter Elementary School. She is a caring and transformational leader," said Dr. Christy Cabezas, Georgia/Alabama District Superintendent. "She has successful administrative experience as an instructional leader and understands the importance of developing relationships with students, parents, educators and command." Ms. Smith will begin her tenure as principal June 29, 2014
A native of New York City, Ms. Smith graduated from New York University with a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics/Computer Science Education. In 1997, she received her Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of Maryland.
Ms. Smith is the mother of two adult daughters who attended DoDDS-Europe schools.
