Gilmer Named DoDEA Americas Elementary Principal of the Year

PEACHTREE CITY, GA — April 14, 2017 — Dr. Vicki Gilmer, principal of both Fort Rucker Primary and Fort Rucker Elementary schools, has been named the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Americas Elementary Principal of the Year. Dr. Christy Huddleston, Southeast District Superintendent, made the announcement at a surprise ceremony at Fort Rucker, Ala., Thursday, April 14.
"I am very proud that Dr. Vicki Gilmer was selected to represent DoDEA Americas as the Principal of the Year," said Dr. Huddleston. "Dr. Gilmer exemplifies professional educational leadership by creating challenging but also caring and supportive conditions conducive to each student's learning. Dr. Gilmer is a progressive and innovative leader who inspires others to reach their fullest potential!"
Dr. Gilmer has over 27 years of experience with DoDEA serving as a teacher and an administrator. Dr. Gilmer has proudly devoted her career to the Fort Rucker military community. Dr. Gilmer began her career with DoDEA at Fort Rucker Primary School and taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade and Reading Recovery. In 2000, she was selected as the Teacher of the Year.
Her administrative career began when she was selected to serve as the assistant principal at Fort Rucker Primary School. In school year 2010-11, Dr. Gilmer was selected to be the principal at Fort Rucker Elementary School and said she thoroughly enjoyed becoming a member of the FRES family. In 2016, Dr. Gilmer had the honor of becoming principal of both Fort Rucker Primary and Fort Rucker Elementary schools which will combine in a new 21st Century School facility in 2019.
"It has been my pleasure to work with Dr. Gilmer and serve as her supervisor," said Dr. Lisa Coleman, DoDEA Americas Georgia/Alabama Community Superintendent. "Dr. Gilmer embodies the love of education with the tenacity and dedication to provide quality instruction for all of her students. A patient and ethical leader, Dr. Gilmer's positive approach in working with all stakeholders has supported her successful tenure as the principal of Fort Rucker Elementary School.
"Earlier this year Dr. Gilmer 's area of responsibility expanded and she now serves as the principal of Fort Rucker Primary and Fort Rucker Elementary schools. In this change Dr. Gilmer's true abilities as an instructional leader and a team builder have shown through. Within these few months she has melded the staffs of both buildings into one huge family while maintaining a continued focus on student achievement. Gilmer is smart, creative and inspiring!"
Dr. Gilmer earned a Bachelor's of Science degree from the University of Alabama, a Master's degree from Troy University and a Doctoral (PhD) degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Auburn University. Dedicated to the field of education, Dr. Gilmer also serves as an adjunct instructor at Troy University-Dothan.
Dr. Gilmer and her husband, Shawn, reside in Headland, Ala., and have two children, Delaney, 21, and Sam, 19. Dr. Gilmer's motto is, "honored to serve the families that serve."
