PEACHTREE CITY, GA — July 22, 2013 — Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss, Interim Director for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)-Cuba, announced today that Mrs. Karen Jones has been named principal of Shughart Middle School, at Fort Bragg, N.C.
Mrs. Jones joined DoDEA in 1992 as a 6th grade Language Arts teacher at Brewster Middle School. She has served as a Reading Specialist and an Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) teacher/coordinator. She began her administrative career in 2010 when she was named Assistant Principal for Bowley Elementary School. In March 2011, she was named Assistant Principal of Shughart Middle School.
"Karen Jones has dedicated herself to the students and staff of Shughart MS since before its opening, serving as assistant principal," said Dr. Emily Marsh, N.C. Fort Bragg District Superintendent. "Her commitment to the community and excellence in education, along with her experience as a middle school teacher, make her an outstanding choice for Shughart MS Principal. I am delighted she has accepted this new role at Fort Bragg Schools."
A native of Worcester, Mass., Mrs. Jones earned a Bachelor's of Arts Degree in Education, graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, N.C.; a Master's of Arts Degree in Education from East Carolina University, and a Master's of School Administration, from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. She and her husband, C. Craig Jones, have two sons and two grandchildren.
