Major Concepts/Content: This course introduces students to the field of biotechnology engineering. Biotechnology is a $30 billion a year industry with high growth potential. It will provide powerful tools for sustainable food and agriculture development, gives us the ability to improve and enhance life, and safe guard public health and medical needs of the American people. These future advances and challenges must be addressed by knowledgeable and motivated scientists and engineers. Today's students will become the expert scientists and engineers of tomorrow. Biotechnology Engineering equips our students with the foundation and vision to excel as the leaders of Biotechnology Engineering revolution.
Major Instructional Activities: The Biotechnology Engineering course is an introductory course providing an overview of the following biotechnology domains: Safety and Skills, History of Biotechnology, DNA Technology, Forensic and Medical Biotechnology, Agricultural Biotechnology, Industrial Biotechnology, and Bioinformatics. The course uses differentiated problem based learning in combination with a hands-on laboratory approach and/or virtual learning resources. Its foundation is built upon learning the tools and techniques of scientific investigation and their application in designing solutions to problems in all scientific and engineering genres as well as identifying the pervasive role that Biotechnology Engineering plays in society. Student learning will be situated in the context of its use and, whenever possible, students will gain exposure to professionals currently in the field through study trips, guest speaking, and professional mentors. Activities involving the collection, organization and analysis of data supported by mathematical applications and computer technology will be threaded throughout the course.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will demonstrate their knowledge through tests, hands-on demonstrations, technical reports, projects, case studies, and reflections.
