COURSE TITLE: Creative Writing AB
CALENDAR YEAR: 2013-2014
GRADE LEVEL: 6-8
COURSE LENGTH: 18 weeks
Major Concepts/Content: This creative writing course will introduce students to the various forms of writing and expose them to the creative process and structure required to write effectively. The course will help students to understand and apply organizational skills and higher level thinking skills as appropriate. Students will use the writing process of prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. Conventions, grammar, and usage of the English language will be applied appropriately.

Topics may include, but are not limited to: word choice, sentence structure, stanza building, rhyming, conventions, structures of fairy tales, children’s stories, poetry, fictional narrative, drama, autobiographical incident, poetry in music, oral interpretation, reader’s theater, etc.
Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities may include, but are not limited to: reading different literary forms and authors, analyzing conventions of various literary forms, journaling, quick writes, writing from prompts, brainstorming, writer’s workshop, tests, projects, portfolio, group work, writing process, etc.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Evaluations may include but are not limited to written products, sharing/presenting of work, completed quizzes, tests, projects, daily writing performance, group and daily participation, quality products from assigned tasks, timeliness of the product, and the demonstration of the understanding of the conventions of genres, teacher, peer, and self-use of rubrics, and portfolios.
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Identify and demonstrate the appropriate use of figurative language
- Recognize and use sound, rhyme, rhythm, repetition, etc.
- Understand and use images and sounds to generate emotion in the reader
- Begin to develop a personal writing style
- Understand the relationship of literary elements
- Demonstrate an awareness of audience, purpose, and mode
- Use the writing process: prewriting, drafting, revising, editing and publishing
- Appreciate the many genres of presentations that can reflect a writer’s subject matter
- Choose an appropriate genre to most effectively convey meaning
- Write in the conventional style for a variety of genres
- Identify elements contained in specific genres

There is no formal textbook required. Computers, internet, media center, media specialist, or the educational technologist, etc., can provide appropriate resources.
