Major Concepts/Content: Environmental studies will explore how naturally occurring and man-made processes contribute to environmental change. The course will provide students a holistic understanding of environmental issues of local, national and global significance. Students will focus on observational skills, environmental analysis, population dynamics, and interactions in communities and ecosystems. They will gain an understanding of earth’s history and how humans play a role in the health and well-being of our planet’s life forms, habitats and natural resources. Students will use appropriate technology to collect and interpret data. They will also gain an understanding and appreciation for actions and best practices needed to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come. Students will explore new career opportunities while developing potential solutions to environmental concerns.
Major Instructional Activities:
- Open-ended investigations, small-group discussions, tests, quizzes, and long-range projects.
- Mathematics, writing, reading, scientific investigation, social skills, and economics are embedded throughout this course.
- Exploration of the mathematics of Art in nature through the study of symmetry, light and color, proportion and ratios, patterns, balance and perspective will be explored as an integral part of environmental studies.
- Service projects will require students to take the knowledge gained and develop a plan of action that will help improve an environmental problem they have identified locally, regionally, or internationally.
- Utilize the computer, probes and appropriate software to measure environmental parameters; evaluate the collected data and use the collected data to draw conclusions and make recommendations.
- Participation in local field trips to explore natural habitat areas and/or development and maintenance of an outdoor learning center to make observations and collect data for analysis and making predictions.
Major Evaluative Techniques:
- Project completion based on rubric specifications
- Daily record of participation in individual and group activities
- Performance on written and oral class assignments
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
- Develop and apply an understanding of the global environment.
- Use data to collect, analyze, and interpret data of the local, regional, and world environments.
- Gain information of career opportunities in the field of environmental studies.
- Demonstrate sensitivity towards environmental issues.
- Articulate the causes and consequences of environmental concerns with resource allocation, pollution, water quality, and economic development.
- Acquire necessary skills for developing potential solutions towards environmental concerns.
- Utilize technology to measure environmental parameters, evaluate the collected data and draw conclusions and make recommendations.
