Major Concepts/Content: The journalism course is designed for students who are interested in learning the basics of news writing. The course will introduce students to the fundamental skills needed for the production of a publishable product, including adherence to ethical values affecting journalists. Students will refine and put to practical use, their thinking, writing, and critiquing skills as well as differentiating between fact and opinion and practicing assigned staff responsibilities in an efficient manner. The focus will be on writing objectively and correctly according to the type of article assigned.

The topics include, but are not limited to: recognizing news, identifying material appropriate for school publication, interviewing skills, choosing and using appropriate objective journalistic writing techniques in preparing publishable material (applying the conventions of English usage, using effective words, sentences and paragraphs, and writing publishable newspaper stories), researching, and using accepted techniques in the preparation of journalistic material (applying ethical methods of obtaining information). Also included are writing, rewriting, editing, proofreading features and editorials, writing headlines and leads, creating an aesthetic page layout, and demonstrating balanced writing on controversial issues.
Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities will be provided in a general classroom setting and in the school and community environment. Students will evaluate newspaper articles and techniques of news writing, study different types of stories published in newspapers, brainstorm ideas for stories, select content suitable for a school newspaper, make informed judgments, research, interview, write, rewrite, edit, proofread, select photographs, prepare page layouts, perform assigned staff responsibilities, make judgments about acceptable and legal journalistic practices, type/reproduce materials, and manage/supervise staff members.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Evaluations may include, but are not limited to: written products, quizzes, tests, projects, daily work, participation, quality products from assigned tasks, the timeliness of the product, and the demonstration of the understanding of ethical issues inherent in the practice of journalism.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to
- Identify types of journalistic styles and leads
- Write an objective news article

- Publish a school newspaper
- Describe various ways a story can be written and communicated
- Distinguish between fact and opinion
- Identify the role of a free press in a democracy and describe laws affecting journalism
- Use editing skills, copy reading, page layout, and photo editing
- Review and practice the journalistic skills and essentials of mass communication required to write and edit

There is no formal textbook required. Computers, internet, media center, media specialist, or the educational technologist can provide appropriate resources.
