CURRICULUM PROGRAM: Virtual School Program
COURSE TITLE: Gaming Design I
CALENDAR YEAR: 2014-2015

Major Concepts/Content: Game Design I course introduces students to the world of video game design and development. Students will study and perform tasks independently and also have the opportunity to discuss content concepts with their peers. Students will learn about various game components, including story, characters, rules, navigation, environment, levels, and audio. Students will create a game design document for a student-designed game that includes each of the basic components learned. Students will also use a 2-D game engine software, Multimedia Fusion (MMF), to develop games. Students will utilize key programming constructs found in the MMF software to create user-defined conditions that dictate the movements and actions of game elements. As a final project, students will complete the process of designing, developing, and testing their games. Game Design I course requires students to continually evaluate and improve their work.

Major Instructional Activities: Students will work in a cross-curricular environment involving computer programming, math, interactive multimedia, animation, design, technical writing, and audio engineering. Student-centered learning will include problem solving, critical thinking, and research through project based learning activities. The focus is on individual projects and software skill development. This course culminates with a capstone project involving the creation of a video game.

Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will study various video games in order to determine common approaches in terms of design and development. Common elements include story, levels, use of sound, and user interface. Grading will be based on how well the gaming concepts are applied and the effort each student exhibits in the completion of projects.
