Major Concepts/Content: This elective course can be a semester or year-long course and provides a variety of opportunities for students to continue developing movement skills and conceptual knowledge in selected sports and individual non-competitive physical activities. Also, students will demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies as they apply to learning and performance of physical activity.
Major Instructional Activities: This course is designed to give students the opportunity to learn complex terminology, rules and strategies in basketball, hockey, flag football and soccer. Students will refine their personal skill levels in selected forms of movement and motor skills and use self and peer assessment to analyze and adjust performance. As the class transitions from basic instruction to a team oriented class, considerable emphasis will be placed on individual fundamentals and the introduction to team formation and offenses. Students will learn team concepts and offensive and defensive plays. This course includes both lecture and activity sessions that allow students to participate in authentic game/situation rules, strategies and terminologies, officiate/judge as appropriate, determine fitness readiness for a specific sport or activity and evaluate personal fitness readiness.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Multiple assessment strategies are used to enable students to demonstrate their movement skills and conceptual knowledge in basketball, hockey, flag football and soccer. Written tests, teacher observations, presentations, video analysis of self, activity logs, ‘game conditions’ play and viewing tapes to assess tactical strategies are possible assessments.
Course Objectives: • Demonstrate advanced knowledge in game/situation rules, strategies and terminologies for basketball, hockey, flag football and soccer • Identify and demonstrate the characteristics and critical elements of a highly skilled performance and strategies for basketball, hockey, flag football and soccer • Describe and demonstrate the use of the safety equipment required for participation in basketball, hockey, flag football and soccer • Demonstrate knowledge of psychological and sociological concepts, principles, and strategies that apply to the learning and performance of physical activity • Demonstrate ability to design and implement a fitness program for life
