Major Concepts/Content: The intercultural education course is designed to acquaint students with the host nation’s culture and values. Intercultural Ed B is designed to strengthen students’ language and cross-cultural skills involved in learning the language of the host nation that were acquired in Intercultural Ed A. Students develop a deeper understanding and respect for linguistic and cultural differences. In this course, students will increase their novice skills to negotiate meaning by using the host nation’s language, interacting with speakers of that language and engaging with the host culture in which the speakers live, including the use of authentic cultural products. Intercultural Ed B is designed to help students develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the differing cultural perspectives of the host nation

Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities will provide the foundation for the study of the host nation’s language and culture. Students will engage with speakers of the host nation’s language, especially with host nation peers, when appropriate and feasible. Students in Intercultural Ed B will continue to develop functional communicative ability and cross-cultural skills by doing projects about host nation culture, sometimes by working with host nation peers. Teachers will use officially adopted materials supplemented with host nation authentic materials such as videos, music and other digital media. Students are continuously asked to think about how they interact with host nation peers and compare their own language and culture to see how different and similar they are.

Major Evaluative Techniques: : Students will be required to take part in simple interpersonal communication activities in the language of the host nation. They will also demonstrate their intercultural learning through a portfolio and self-assessment check list. Students will be asked to present their new learning in a variety of ways. Teachers will score student work using rubrics to help students observe their own growth in language and intercultural competence.

Course Objectives: • Communicate in the host nation’s language using short memorized phrases and short sentences. • Reflect on host nation cultural practices and how they are both similar and different to their own. • Document their participation in host nation cultural events such as singing, dancing, sports, arts and crafts. • Explain host nation cultural practices and how they are similar to or different from their own.
