About the Program:
The Robotics Engineering course teaches high school students the engineering/design process using mechanisms, machines, and robotic systems, as well as pre-employment and employment skills.
Major Concepts/Content: The Robotics Engineering course teaches high school students the engineering/design process using mechanisms, machines, and robotic systems. Students progress at their own pace while studying and performing tasks independently and in small groups. Hands-on activities supplemented with demonstrations, mentorship, and study trips familiarize students with the concepts and application of robotics technologies. Performing laboratory experiments, students will gain firsthand knowledge of simple machines, fabrication, and logic systems. Students will also learn how to program complex robotic systems to perform a variety of interesting and useful tasks. Using robotics as a vehicle for instruction, engineering education will engage students meaningfully thereby increasing interest in the pursuit of engineering careers.
Major Instructional Activities: The Robotics Engineering course is flexible yet consistent in design. It is a student centered, competency based course that has been functionally grouped into instructional modules. Each module contains pre-test, practicum, and post test assessments. Hands-on and project based activities guide instruction as students acquire desired skill-sets. Students are presented with problems they must research and work individually or in groups to solve. Students self-assess using an individual competency profile. Opportunities to demonstrate 21st Century Skills permeate the learning environment.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will demonstrate their knowledge through tests, hands-on demonstrations, technical reports, and projects.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of the course, students should be able to: -Demonstrate safe behavior and practices in a laboratory environment. -Understand the history, social impact, and fundamentals of robot technology. -Identify mechanisms and explain their operation in simple machines. -Apply math and science to develop robotics solutions to design problems. -Apply the Engineering/Design Process to solve problems. -Practice troubleshooting techniques to resolve malfunctions. -Program robots to understand data acquisition, data handling, and conversion. -Employ voice recognition/synthesis, vision systems, and interfacing techniques. -Build models that simulate robots at work. -Investigate the Engineering Profession and Related Careers. -Conduct, develop, and present technical reports and a threaded case study.
