Major Concepts/Content: Chinese I AB introduces Mandarin Chinese language and culture to middle school students. This introductory course lays the foundation for students to develop functional proficiency in both spoken and written Chinese at the novice level.

Major Instructional Activities: Classroom activities will be interactive, using visual aids and stimulating motivators for language learning. Simple Chinese characters will be introduced through meaningful contexts to help students build fundamental literacy. This introductory course will focus on the themes of the self, the classroom and life in and around the school.

Major Evaluative Techniques: Formative and summative language and cultural assessments will be used to gauge students’ development in all three modes of communication: interpersonal speaking, interpretive listening and presentational speaking and writing. This introductory course will focus on the development of interpretive skills as well as an understanding of basic cultural products and practices.

Essential Expectations: Upon successful completion of Chinese I AB course, the student should be able to:
• Recognize and use simple Chinese words related to the self, the classroom and life in and around school. • Reflect on cultural differences between the cultural practices and products of China and their own.
