Major Concepts/Content: These semester courses are designed to fully enable seventh grade students to progress in the skill competencies and conceptual knowledge related to the movement and physical activity and personal and social needs of adolescents. Developmentally appropriate concepts of physical fitness, motor skill and personal and social development are included in this course. Students apply appropriate physical activity and fitness concepts to the development of a health-enhancing level of physical fitness. They apply basic biomechanical principles, tactical skills and strategies in modified sports and activities and demonstrate competency in critical elements of serving, bumping, dribbling, scoring, fielding, batting, and forehand and backhand striking. They understand the importance of rules and safety procedures and can define the FITT Principle as it relates to physical fitness development. Students plan ways to do physical activity as part of their daily routine.
Major Instructional Activities: Multiple formative and summative assessment strategies are used to enable students to receive and use descriptive feedback to gain competency and confidence in their movement skills and concepts, physical fitness, and personal and social skills; e.g., observations, checklists, written summaries, authentic performance tasks, rubric scoring scales, tests, and portfolio and product assessment, as well as assessments by the teacher, self, and peers. The adopted DoDEA Physical Fitness Education and Assessment program, with pre and post health-related physical fitness testing, is implemented in this course. Students are assessed on their achievement of understanding of physical fitness and motor skill concepts and principles, competency in the processes of fitness and motor skill performance, and achievement of personal fitness and motor skill goals. It is important that the results (raw data/scores) obtained through the performance tests of physical fitness and motor skills are used to determine appropriate personal goals and student achievement of personal goals and not as grading criteria for this course. Students are graded on what they know and are able to do as a result of the learning that has occurred during the course.
Major Evaluative Techniques: Instructional activities focus on students’ needs and interests and are designed to further develop students' movement and physical fitness, as well as, personal and social competency. Students participate in a variety of modified sports, cooperative and individual activities; rhythmic gymnastic; aerobic, folk, line and square dance; physical fitness; and other physical activities. Applications of motor skills, movement principles, and personal and social skills to sport, heart-rate monitor technology, and formal health-related physical fitness assessment are featured. Combining basic elements of movement in rhythmic/dance, fielding, ball control and net/wall sports are emphasized in this course.
