Major Concepts/Content: The Focus Social/Leisure course is designed to develop a repertoire of developmentally appropriate social and leisure activities the student can engage in both individually and in a group. Instruction is meaningful, functional, age appropriate, and integrated in various community settings (i.e., library, shopping center). Activities use naturally occurring materials and situations, and are designed to help students acquire and generalize skills. Students develop and increase social skills to function to the greatest extent possible in post-secondary life. These skills include social and behavioral control/expectations, communication skills, conflict resolution, interpersonal and intrapersonal problem solving, and responsibility. Emphasis is also placed on activities occurring in the community setting and addresses personal safety, and indoor and outdoor leisure/recreation.
Major Instructional Activities: Instructional activities involve practical application for the generalization of skills in natural settings such as home, school, and community. Student activities include human sexuality/ dating/ healthy relationships, personal safety, issues on abuse, exploitation, and abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Activities include pursuing hobbies, interests, sports, or other appropriate activities undertaken in free time. Activities may require the student to be knowledgeable of the use of related technology, tools and equipment (i.e., computer software, communication device).
Major Evaluative Techniques: Students will be evaluated through informal and formal assessments. Multiple authentic assessments will be used as students perform, produce and otherwise demonstrate skills in the context of real life scenarios. The objectives of this course may not be mastered in one school year and students may earn multiple credits in this course.
Course Objectives: The essential objectives of Focus Social/ Leisure course are designed to facilitate learning outcomes appropriate to the instructional needs of each student. Instructional activities are based upon real world needs with the goal of increased independence and autonomy in his or her home and community.
