2014 TEACHER OF THE YEAR
It is with pride and honor that the Korea District recognizes Ms. Katie Biggs,
Seoul American Elementary School, Kindergarten Classroom Teacher, as the 2014 Teacher of the Year.
Ms. Katie Biggs, Korea District Teacher of the Year for 2014, has taught in DoDEA schools for twelve years. Ms. Biggs began her DoDEA career as a first grade teacher at Schweinfurt Elementary School in Schweinfurt, Germany. She currently teaches Kindergarten at Seoul American Elementary School, Seoul, Korea. Beyond her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Biggs is the Seoul American Elementary School Mentorship Facilitator/Coordinator, CSI grade-level chair and the Student Support Team co-chair. Ms. Biggs also developed a school-wide team building activity (SAES Amazing Race) and coordinated two community children’s concerts. She is actively involved in the community and was awarded the General Thurman Award (2012).
Ms. Biggs earned a bachelor degree in Exercise Science, Health and Wellness from Abilene Christian University, but soon realized educating children was her true passion and fell in love with the art of teaching. She attended Southwestern Texas State University, earning her teaching degree and began her career in January 2002. Ms. Biggs’ passion for teaching young learners is what led her to obtain her Masters of Early Childhood Education. Welcoming a room full of children, challenging them to become critical thinkers, leading them to successes, and watching them grow as lifelong learners and valuable members of our 21st Century society are what fuels her daily teachings. Ms. Biggs teaches to the whole child and strives for every child to walk out the door feeling successful, loved, safe, valued and inspired.
Ms. Biggs is a military spouse, married to LTC Bradley S. Biggs, and has two children Kampten and Graysen. She feels thankful to serve the children of our armed forces and strives to not only bring honor to their parent/guardians profession but create an environment where the children feel empowered and determined to always do their absolute best.
Ms. Biggs believes in the power of a triangulated partnership between the parents, community and school. She believes this triangulation is the foundation for a pure and solid education. She strives to bridge these vital partnerships, showcasing the invaluable leadership from all stakeholders.
Dr. Catherine Yurica, Principal, Seoul American Elementary School shared the following comments about Ms. Biggs:
"Mrs. Katie Biggs does not just teach, she inspires students with her creativity and enthusiasm. Her love for teaching is seen in everything she does. Ms. Biggs’ dedication to her profession extends beyond her classroom to the entire school and community. She was responsible for bringing Dan Crow, a songwriter and performer, to Seoul American Elementary School (SAES) for two years in a row. In addition, Ms. Biggs has been an enthusiastic supporter of STEM and PTO activities which rely heavily on volunteer support from the community. In March, she will sponsor the upcoming Dr. Seuss Family Fun Night at SAES highlighting 21st Century learning skills."
We are proud to have Ms. Biggs represent the Korea District as our Teacher of the Year. Her application, along with those from the other districts, will now be forwarded to DoDEA Headquarters in Arlington. One of those teachers will be selected the DoDEA Teacher of the Year.
