The Japan District Superintendent’s Office is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Denise Leach as the new principal of Yokosuka Middle School in Yokosuka, Japan.
A career educator committed to student success, Ms. Leach has enjoyed serving military communities in many locales around the world to include Panama, Italy, Germany, and Japan.
Ms. Leach grew up and attended schools at various locations in Texas and the Dominican Republic. After receiving her bachelor’s in education at the University of Texas, Austin, she began her education career in Houston where she taught high school special education and worked for a private educational diagnostic clinic. After three years of teaching and completion of her master’s degree in education from the University of Houston, she decided to couple her career in education with her love for travel.
Ms. Leach began her DoDEA career with a four-year tour in Panama as a high school special education teacher. She then moved to Naples, Italy, where she taught various elementary grade levels for six years. Additionally, she served the Naples schools complex as the instructional coach for The Study of Teaching—a special staff-development program designed to foster collaboration among and professional growth of individual teachers and administrators.
Following a year-long sabbatical in Texas, Ms. Leach moved to Wuerzburg, Germany, where she began her administrative career as the assistant principal of Wuerzburg American Middle School. Three years later, Ms. Leach was promoted to principal at the school where she remained until transferring to Camp Zama, Japan, during school year 2006-07 to open the new Zama American Middle School. She completed eight wonderful years as principal of the Zama American MS Samurai before being named principal of Yokosuka Middle School located aboard Commander Fleet Activities Yokosuka—a U.S. Naval base located 18 miles south of Yokohama, Japan.
Ms. Leach enjoys the high energy, humor, and socialization of the middle-age child. She finds much joy in being a part of the education and social development of pre-adolescent and early adolescent youth. Moreover, she is honored to serve as a school principal for military-connected children and their families stationed overseas.
When not at school with the children, Ms. Leach enjoys reading, traveling, scuba diving, and hiking. She loves finding new restaurants and camaraderie with her friends.
Ms. Leach is looking forward to being part of the Yokosuka Middle School Dragons’ team and the CFAY community.
