Middle / High School Student Council

Middle/High School Student Council

Eligibility: Any student in good standing both academically and socially may run for election in student council. Only seniors and juniors are eligible to run for the office of President. All 9-12 graders can run for Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer. There are two class representative positions available for each grade.

Description: The purpose of student council is to: develop leadership skills and to practice good citizenship, promote harmonious relations throughout. Events they are in charge of include Spirit Weeks, Pep Rallies, and Field Day.

Meeting Time: Every Wednesday. during lunch. See school sponsor for location.

Additional Information: Students elected will be asked to purchase a student council t-shirt and provide lunch at least twice during the school year for all council members. They will be expected to participate in all pep rallies, fundraisers, spirit week and field day

Student 2 Student (S2S) and Junior Student-2-Student (JS2S)

 Eligibility: Any and all 6th through 12th grade students who are positive, open minded, friendly, well rounded and posses good leadership, citizenship and service skills who are interested in being ambassadors to our school and community by sponsoring new students who come to Ankara.

Description: Students are trained to provide leadership in order to support students who are transitioning to or from their school. The team is composed of advisors and students of all grade levels.The focus is student-centered, and is student-led. Students act as sponsors to new students, ambassadors to the school. They are available to answer questions via e-mail before new students arrive, they greet them upon arrival, give personalized tours of the school, answer the many questions new students have about our school and community, host social events for new students and students leaving, and help to give the new students an overall positive experience during their transition to our school.

Meeting Time: As needed throughout the year, before school, during school, and/or after school.

National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

NHS Eligibility: Open to 10-12 graders.  Must have 3.4 GPA (without rounding)  at the end of semester; NJHS members open to 7-9th graders qualifications to be decided by the council

Description: The 4 pillars: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, Character; community service projects.

Meeting Times: Mondays at Lunch and as needed.

Academic Games

Eligibility: All 9-12 grade students

Description: This is a trivia game in which academically-minded students compete among themselves.  The goal is to travel to the DoDDS Europe championship to compete against other schools.

Meeting Time: Thursdays during lunch.


Cooking Club

Eligibility: Fall Grades 2-5, Winter Grades 6-8, Spring Grades 9-12. 

Description: The purpose of cooking club is to help foster the love of cooking in the students.

Meeting Times: Wednesdays from 2:45 PM to 4:15 PM

English as a Second Language (ESL) Club

Eligibility:  All students in the school  Fall: Grades 1-3, Winter: Grades 4-5, Spring: Grades 6-8

Description: To foster the learning of English through games and activities.

Meeting Time: Mondays 2:45 PM to 4:15 PM

Elementary School Art Club

Eligibility: Students in grades 1-5  Winter: Grades 1 & 2  Spring: Grades 3-5

Description: To work on age-appropriate art projects.

Elementary School Games Club

 Eligibility: Grades 3-5

Description: The games club introduces students to logical reasoning through board games.

Meeting Times: Winter - Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Elementary School Get Moving Club

 Eligibility: Fall: Grades 3-5; Spring Grades K-2

Description: to play many different sports and physical activities to help students get in better shape.

Meeting Times: Fall: Wednesdays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM; Spring: Mondays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Elementary School Computer Club

Eligibility: Students in Grades K-5

Description: Students will perform such activities as reinforcing learning using computer games.

Meeting Time: Winter: Mondays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Elementary School Tutoring/Homework Club

Eligibility: Students in Grades 1-5

Description: The purpose of tutoring/homework club is to give students a place where they can do their homework and get help if they need it.

Meeting Times: Year-long activity Thursday 2:45 PM-4:15 PM

Middle School - Math Counts

Eligibility: Students in Grades 6-8

Description: MarthCounts is a program that  promotes higher level thinking skills and problem solving for math enrichment and competitions. During our weekly sessions, we discuss challenging problems and various ways that can be used to solve them. The competition season begins in winter at local level, and if successful continues at state and national levels.

Middle School Intramurals

Eligibility: Grades 6 - 8

Description: This club is designed to get students of the same age group actively involved in the sports of the time. Participating in organized sports allows students to develop leadership skills, and to develop and understanding sportsmanship behavior and fair play.

Meeting Times: Fall: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Middle / High School Running Club

Eligibility: Students in Grades 6-12

Description: We will be following running programs that are appropriate for age level and fitness level. We will also be doing some conditioning exercises to accompany our running workouts. You are required to wear appropriate running shoes (see me if you are not sure what these are) and you are required to bring water to every meeting. Attendance is not required on all three days. You can choose to some to just one day a week if that is what fits your schedule.

Meeting Times: Fall: Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 2:45 PM - 4: 15 PM.

Junior Leadership Seminar

Eligibility: Any 7th or 8th grade student in good academic standing who completed the application packet, and interviews with the selection committee.

Description: The purpose of JLS is to: develop leadership skills and to practice good citizenship, take what you learn at JLS and contribute to a service project at your school.

Meeting Time: Application Packets - the first week of school, Interviews TBD, Travel to Germany in October for a week.

Additional Information:  Students are expected to pay 200 euro (subject to change) for the trip as well as perform a service project at Ankara Es/HS. Last year it was the Jingle Jog Fun Run.

Middle School Junior Rangers

Eligibility: Middle School Students (grades 6-8)

Description: The purpose of junior rangers is to foster a love and appreciation of nature and the outdoors through observation, investigation, and exploration.

Meeting Time: Thursdays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Additional Information: Students spend as much time outdoors as possible. They may get dirty during planting season. Students sketch, play games, make artifacts using natural materials, and take time to observe and contemplate nature.

Middle School - Odyssey of the Mind

Eligibility: Grades 5-7

Description: This is an academic and creative problem-solving club that is both fun and educational.

Middle School News Club

Eligibility: Students in grades 6-8

Description: To develop and produce a newsletter with the middle school audience in mind.

Meeting Times: Winter on Wednesdays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Middle School Tennis / Volleyball Camp

Eligibility: Students in grades 6-8

Description: To develop in the student through intensive training and concentration basic skills in Tennis and Volleyball.

Meeting Times: Spring Season Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (High School)

Elibility: Students in grades 9-12

Description: The Junior Science & Humanities Symposium is for high school students who have an interest in science. Students will have the opportunity to carry out their own science projects and present them in Germany. This club is scholastic and students will take 3 science tests and 1 math test.

Meeting Times: Year Round, Mondays 2:45 PM - 4:15 PM

Model United Nations

Eligibility: Students in grades 8-12

Description: Students act as U.N. diplomats to discuss world events.  This activity culminates in a conference with schools from around Turkey.

Meeting Times: Semester 1 only. Tuesday during lunch, Thursdays 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

After School Music

 Eligibility: Grade 5 Students

Description: Beginning Band instruments are taught for 1 hour each week with the instruments being loaned to the students for the year.  Students learn care of the instruments, making good tones on them, and use note-reading in order to play the music.  This is an after-school activity and now course credit is offered. This is offered to students in hopes that they would sign up for beginning band the following year and more quickly continue on their musical journey.
