Aukamm Elementary School donates to help Hurricane Sandy victims
Jeff G. Pond, Acting Principal Aukamm Elementary School
Wiesbaden, Germany | November 21, 2012
Ms. Stephens' 5th Grade Class decided to collect quarters to give to the American Red Cross Relief Effort for victims of Hurricane Sandy. So, on November 16, 2012 the students at Aukamm Elementary School built a "Quarter Line".AES put their quarters together and raised $1454.00 for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. That's right, twenty-five cents at a time, when all totaled, AES raised $1454.00.The day began with the first student from Ms Stephens' class placing a quarter on the floor outside Mr Pond's office, the acting principal.Quarter after quarter, the line began to grow.It made its way around the library, down the main hall ways, up the stairs, and back down the upstairs hallway. In the end the line went all throughout the building and eventually stopped upstairs.
In effort with AES's partner unit, the 102nd Battalion, Community Bank, the American Red Cross and the AES PTA, the quarters were gathered, stacked, rolled and counted. The final amount was tallied and placed on a supersized check that Ms Stephens' class was able to present to the American Red Cross.
Although the money was counted and the day was over, the fun didn't stop.According to Mr. Pond, "The students will have various opportunities for follow-up mathematical activities provided by our teachers that will be valuable in understanding number operations. At AES we are striving to make everything we do relevant to the learning process for the student."Aukamm's Continuous School Improvement (CSI) Goals are:1. The students will improve their reading comprehension and 2. The students will improve in math number operations. So beside the fact that this was a "feel good" operation to support the victims of Hurricane Sandy, AES wanted to show how this fund raiser relates to the academic development of the AES students. The students then began to think about the quarter line and ask mathematical questions… can you answer them?
How many quarters are in $1454.00?
If 40 quarters placed in a line equal one meter, how long was the AES Quarter Line?
If not…ask an Aukamm Elementary School student.
