Lawson

Kaiserslautern High School

Kaiserslautern District

Name: Michael Lawson

What do you plan on doing after graduation?
I will be attending the U.S. Military Academy Preparatory School, West Point majoring in Mechanical Engineering/ Pre-Med.

What are some of your favorite school memories that you will take with you as you move on to the next chapter of your life?
A special memory is being part of the Division 1 Cross Country team that won the 2012 European Championship, the first KHS Men's Cross Country to win Europeans since 1996. I also had a lot of struggles juggling extra-curricular activities with my sports throu9hout high school. However, I could always rely on my friends to bring me back after a stress-filled week. I enjoyed the good times and the bad, because they both brought me to where I am today, and showed me who my good friends really were.

What will you miss most as you look back on your DoDDS-Europe overseas school experience?
I will miss the connection that all of the DoDDS-Europe students share with one another. We all have an affiliation with the military in one way or another, and although these schools are considered public schools, they seem more like private schools for a very special group of kids. I am proud to be part of that group.

What advice would you give to the current underclassmen?
The advice that I would give to current underclassmen is to work hard, but not too hard. You have to do well in school and on the SAT and ACT in order to get to the schools where you want to go. But life isn't just about working hard. At some point, you have to take a breath and enjoy life.lf you're always looking at the horizon, you'll never appreciate the beauty around you.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I see myself serving the the United States Army as a doctor in 10 years. I have always wanted to end up serving in the Army like my father, and it looks like I will be following exactly in his footsteps. However, if I do not end up doing this in the future then I am just fine with that. My goal is to find happiness in life, and I've found that ensuring the happiness of others is the fastest way to find my own happiness.
