Fort Stewart, GA | January 13, 2016
Anyone who's spent a bit of time around Fort Stewart has seen the Warrior's Walk, the lines of more than 400 trees dedicated to the 3rd Infantry Division Soldiers who have lost their lives in the War on Terror. But a group of administrators and students at Kessler Elementary school, have gone the extra mile and informally "adopted" two of the markers.
Johnnie Sledge, a special education assessor at Kessler, started caring for the memorials to Cpl. William Richardson and Sgt. Isaiah Washington when, while walking through the memorial one day six years ago, found a spotlight out on Richardson's. She brought that to the attention of the groundskeepers, but then felt she could do more for these Fallen Soldiers.
"We are blessed to have these people who have given their lives for our freedom," she said.
She and a colleague took part in that year's Wreath Walk, and when she saw that those two markers remained without wreaths after the Families had all gone through, they laid wreaths themselves.
