Student Activities

Joan K. Mendel Elementary School provides opportunities for all students to participate in each activity.  Most activities take place after school, one day a week.  Activities will be announced via the parent newsletter as well as at the school.  Most Mendel ES activities typically begin sometime in October, watch the parent newsletter for activity announcements.

  • It is DoDEA policy that students have the "right to a public education of high quality, including the opportunity to participate in activities," in accordance with Executive Order 13160, DoDEA Administrative Instruction (Al) 2500.14 and Department of Defense Instruction 1342.12, "without regard to race, sex, color, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or status as a parent." (DoDEA Al 2051.02, Section 4.a.l.,p.2.)
  • "It is DoDEA policy that a student with a disability, or who has a record of a disability, or is regarded as having a disability, shall not be excluded from participating in, or be denied the benefits of, any DoDEA education program or activity; or be subjected to discrimination based solely on a disability." (DoDEA Al 2500.14, Section 4.a., p.2.)

Chorus

Chorus is an after school club offered to 3rd-5th grade students who enjoy singing and wish to perform. Chorus is non-auditioned, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who wish to join are welcome.  Performances usually occur in December and May, with two additional small performances at the YCC.  Chorus typically begins mid-September, but students are welcome to join at any time throughout the year. 

Permission form will be available in September.

Safety patrol

5th Grade students interested in being community helpers, can volunteer to be a part of our cross walk safety patrol.  Students are responsible for arriving to school a little early and staying a few minutes later, to assist others in crossing the streets to Mendel ES safely.  They wear reflective vests and carry stop signs.

Art Club

Is offered to 4th and 5th graders. Students who participate will have an opportunity to make a variety of projects using different media. Class size will be limited to 20 children. Those who are serious about making the most of the class should apply, once applications are available--this will be posted in a Parent Newsletter. Students who have conflicting activities should not apply. If you are willing to serve as a parent helper during the art club, please indicate this on the application. Applications are to be placed in the yellow school bus box by inside of the art room, if more than 20 applications are received a lottery will take place for the positions.

Library Assistants

4th and 5th grade students are invited to participate in this club. Meetings will be held after school.  Watch for more information in our school newsletter, as clubs begin to start up.

Nihongo Guitar Club

For 4th and 5th Grade student interested in learning how to play the guitar.

Nihongo Tennis Club

3rd, 4th and 5th grade students may sign up for Tennis Club.  Students will learn how to play tennis.

Science Club

Provides students with an opportunity to explore hands-on science activities. Science Club schedules and availability are still to be determined.


Soroban Club

3rd - 5th grade students will learn how to use Soroban (Abacus).

Strategic Games

Open to 3rd - 5th grade students.  Schedule to be determined

Yearbook Club

4th and 5th Graders are able to assist with creating our school yearbook. The club begins meeting in Oct.  and will go through April/May, as needed. Club meets after school, one day a week.  The schedule is still to be determined.
