Student Activities

Joan K. Mendel Elementary School provides opportunities for all students to participate in each activity.  Most activities take place after school, one day a week.  Activities will be announced via the parent newsletter as well as at the school.  Most Mendel ES activities typically begin sometime in October, watch the parent newsletter for activity announcements.

  • It is DoDEA policy that students have the "right to a public education of high quality, including the opportunity to participate in activities," in accordance with Executive Order 13160, DoDEA Administrative Instruction (Al) 2500.14 and Department of Defense Instruction 1342.12, "without regard to race, sex, color, national origin, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or status as a parent." (DoDEA Al 2051.02, Section 4.a.l.,p.2.)
  • "It is DoDEA policy that a student with a disability, or who has a record of a disability, or is regarded as having a disability, shall not be excluded from participating in, or be denied the benefits of, any DoDEA education program or activity; or be subjected to discrimination based solely on a disability." Chorus

Chorus is an after school club offered to 3rd-5th grade students who enjoy singing and wish to perform. Chorus is non-auditioned, all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students who wish to join are welcome.  Performances usually occur in December and May, with two additional small performances at the YCC.  Chorus typically begins mid-September, but students are welcome to join at any time throughout the year. 

This is a year-round club.

Safety patrol

5th Grade students interested in being community helpers, can volunteer to be a part of our cross walk safety patrol.  Students are responsible for arriving to school a little early and staying a few minutes later, to assist others in crossing the streets to Mendel ES safely.  They wear reflective vests and carry stop signs.  Student work shifts based on the number of students signed up for Safety Patrol.  They do not work every day of every week, but may work one or two weeks before and after school and then have one or two weeks off. 

This is a year-long activity, before and after school.  Students who are a part of Safety Patrol can join other after school activities, but will be a few minutes late arriving to the other activity, on days they are scheduled for Safety Patrol.

Library Service Club

4th and 5th grade students are invited to participate in this club. Meetings will be held after school.  New opportunities to join this club will be offered for each round of club sign ups.

Nihongo Guitar Club

For 4th and 5th Grade student interested in learning how to play the guitar. This is a year-round club.

Nihongo Tennis Club (4th and 5th Grade)

4th and 5th grade students may sign up for Tennis Club.  Students will learn how to play tennis. This is a year-round club.

Soroban Club

3rd - 5th grade students will learn how to use Soroban (Abacus). This is a year-round club.

Yearbook Club

4th and 5th Graders are able to assist with creating our school yearbook. The club begins meeting in Oct.  and will go through April/May, as needed.

STEM - Robotics Club

Available for 4th and 5th grade students interested in STEM and Robotics.  This is a year-long club, as we will be participating in the FIRST Lego League Challenges sponsored by a grant from DoD STEM.  Sign ups took place with Round 1 of club offerings and these students will be in this club for the whole school year.

Nihongo Tennis Club (3rd Grade)

3rd grade students may sign up for Tennis Club.  Students will learn how to play tennis. This is a year-round club.

Sneakers

This is a running club open to all K - 5th grade students.  There is a maximum number of students accepted due to supervision requirements.  Students can sign up during the Round 1, 2 or 3 sign up times and will be notified if they are selected for the club.

Panda Post Jr.

4th and 5th Grade students who are interseted in journalism, may be wish to sign up for the Panda Post Jr. where they will help publish a student newsletter. This is a year-round club.

Math Club

4th and 5th grade students can sign up for Math Club.  This club is available for round 1 of the club offerings.  Depending on interest it may continue to be available in future offerings.

1st-3rd Grade students who are intested in joining a book club, can sign up for this activity.  This is a round 1 activity.  Depending on interest, it may be available for future rounds.
