E.J. King HS

Arrival/Dismissal Procedures

Arrival

For grades 7-12, the first bell rings at 7:45 a.m. and class begins promptly at 7:55 a.m. Students will not enter school before 7:45 a.m. because supervision is not available until that time.

Picking up or dropping off students?

EJ King HS pick-up area

There is a drop off point for students on Alaska Loop. It is designated by pavement stripes and is adjacent to a paved path to the crosswalk. By letting your child off at the appropriate point, you help to keep the campus free of unnecessary automobile traffic at a time when children are going to classes in our many buildings. Please practice safety for all our children and use the drop off.

The designated drop off zone is located on Alaska Loop.

Dismissal

The bell to dismiss students rings at 2:50 p.m. Each student must observe the following rules:

  1. Students who walk are not allowed in the area where the buses are being loaded nor are they allowed to remain on campus.
  2. Parents who drop and pick students up at school are asked to avoid the areas where the buses load. Please arrange with your students to pick them up on the road just beyond the school gym. Please do not enter on to Kentucky Ave. between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m.; and 2:40 p.m. and 3:10 p.m.
  3. School buses are scheduled to depart 10 minutes after the final bell (usually 3 p.m.)

Early Dismissal

Students cannot be released to non-family members without written verification from the sponsor. If a parent intends to pick up a student before regular dismissal time, a note should be sent to the teacher that morning or the previous day. Do not call the office unless it is an emergency. We make every effort not to disrupt classes.

A parent who wishes to take a student out of school during the school day (for a medical appointment for example), should send a note indicating the specific time the child should be released from class. The Student Affairs Office will contact the teacher and the student will be sent to the office. If the note from the parent indicates a specific pick up time, the teacher may wish to send the student to the office to wait for the parent. Please do not go to your student’s classroom without checking with the office first.

Tardiness Policies

Late arrivals will be considered "tardy unexcused" unless the school receives written verification from the parent or sponsor consistent with the reasons for excused absences.

Students are expected to report to school each day on time and to report to all classes on time. Failure to do so constitutes tardiness.

Students are responsible for making up all missed work when arriving late to class. d. Students missing less than Y2 school day will be counted present, but will be marked "tardy excused", or "tardy unexcused."

Excused Tardy

  • Conditions that constitute an excused absence also constitute excused tardy. (See section 4.b. of DoDEA REGULATION 2095.01)

Unexcused Tardy

  1. Tardy from school or a class without written verification from a parent or sponsor will be unexcused.
  2. Students leaving school grounds without prior written parent or sponsor permission.
Excessive Tardy
  1. School administration shall monitor daily attendance data to identify students who frequently arrive late to school. Appropriate interventions may be developed to improve on-time arrival to school, taking into consideration the student's unique circumstances to include illness, extensive medical appointments or procedures, or family circumstances.
  2. After 5 cumulative tardies (excused or unexcused) in a semester, the administration shall meet with the student and their parent or sponsor to discuss the excessive tardiness and identify the extent to which the tardiness has impacted the student's academic and social-emotional progress. Consideration shall be made for the student's unique circumstances to include illness, extensive medical appointments or procedures, or family circumstances.
  3. As appropriate, the SST is responsible for developing an intervention plan to support the student's successful completion and advancement for the current school-year.

Consequences for a tardy from 0 to 14 minutes will be given by the teacher. When a student is more than 15 minutes late for school, he/she must sign in at the office with a note from parents stating the reason for the tardiness. If there is no note, the student will receive a RE-ADMIT SLIP marked “unexcused” until a note is presented. A “three day time limit” will apply. If a student is more than 45-minutes late for class, it is an absence requiring a note. Students who are tardy for class more than three times may be reported to administration for disciplinary action. Tardiness disrupts class and cannot be tolerated.
