The Japan District Superintendent’s Office is pleased to announce the selection of Ms. Kathleen Smith as the new assistant principal of Yokosuka Middle School in Yokosuka, Japan.
Ms. Smith is a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving from January 1989 to August 1998. Ms. Smith obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Francis Marion University in December 2000. She received a Master of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Phoenix in 2005. In 2010 she received graduate level certification in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix.
Ms. Smith’s career in education began in January 2001 as a teacher for Darlington County School District in Lamar, South Carolina. She joined DoDEA in August of 2003. She served students as a kindergarten and first grade teacher at Kitzingen Primary School in Kitzingen, Germany. In 2006 she was transferred to Okinawa, Japan. While in Okinawa, Ms. Smith served as a first and second grade teacher and Continuous School Improvement Chair at Kadena Elementary, as a reading specialist and Continuous School Improvement Chair at E.C. Killan Elementary, and as an Instruction Systems Specialist at the Okinawa District Office. She was the 2009 Okinawa District Teacher of the Year. In July 2010, Ms. Smith was selected as Assistant Principal at Netzaberg Elementary School located in Grafenwoehr, Germany. In July 2012, Ms. Smith served as Principal of Cummings Elementary School in Misawa, Japan. Her most recent assignment was as a first grade teacher at Holbrook Elementary School, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
Ms. Smith is the proud mother of a son who is a DoDEA graduate currently residing in Lamar, South Carolina. She is looking forward to the opportunity to work with parents, students, teachers, and the Yokosuka community as Assistant Principal of Yokosuka Middle School.
