West Point Middle School
West Point, NY | June 2, 2017
Throughout the month of May English Language Arts classes learned about the art of speech and debate in a variety of ways. As a culminating activity, students were given the assignment to prepare and present a speech on the topic of "A Volunteer Who Has Made a Difference." After holding quarter-final, semi-final, and final competitions at the grade level, two winners from each grade competed in the school-wide speech competition on Friday, June 2, 2017. A panel of judges from WPES and the West Point community watched and rated each speech and in the end, three winners were crowned: Dan Read (5th grade) won first place, Charlee Van Poppel (8th grade) won second place, and Madeline McInvale (5th grade) won third place. Other contestants in the school competition included Justus Crowe (8th grade), Emme Richards and Brayden Holler (7th grade), and Rian Gage and Madelyn Thiriot (6th grade).
