Figures comparing the per pupil expenditures of Department of Defense and non-Department of Defense schools can be misleading. It should be noted that non-DoD school systems receive significant additional support through state and federal grant programs and private sector donations. These funds, which can represent a sizable percentage of a school system's budget, are not reflected in the published per pupil costs. In contrast, DoD schools are not eligible for grants, or foundation or private sector support, and the published per pupil expenditures include all funds appropriated for instruction and instructional support. |
