Dr. Miles’ End of School Year 2008-2009 Letter

Our schools around the world are preparing to wrap-up School Year 2008-2009.  Many DoDEA schools in the United States have already completed the school year, with the remainder of schools in Europe and the Pacific scheduled to break for the summer beginning in mid-June.

The end of the school year provides the opportunity to review the changes that have taken place and assess our progress on new initiatives.

School's out, but we're still here!

As you head out for summer break, DoDEA wants you to know that our staff is busy preparing for School Year 2009-2010.  Please feel free to contact us with your ideas, questions, or concerns.

There are many ways to communicate with DoDEA.

The DoDEA Director, Dr. Shirley A. Miles, welcomes questions and input from parents, teachers, students, administrators, or commanders. We seek your input through command-sponsored town halls, school visits, and participation in education organizations.

Following is a list of additional avenues of input for DoDEA's customers.  E-mail and phone calls are also welcomed and answered promptly.  Please direct e-mails to the DoDEA Director at: dodea.director@hq.dodea.edu.

Parents are always encouraged and welcomed to send us their thoughts and comments regarding any aspect of their child's education.  During the school year, they can do this by talking with their child's teacher or principal.  They can also send a message to their child's teacher, principal, district superintendent, area director, or to the DoDEA Director.

Other avenues of input for parents include:

  • School Advisory Committee
  • Installation Advisory Committee
[Note: Suggestions or unresolved issues from these committees work their way through the advisory committee/council process including Component Commanders Councils; European Schools Council; Pacific Theatre Education Council (PTEC); Dependents Education Council (DEC); and ACDE]
  • School Improvement Leadership Teams (SILT)
  • DoDEA Website
  • Customer Satisfaction Survey
  • Parent Teacher Organization/Parent Teacher Association (PTO/PTA)
  • School Liaison Officers
  • Commanders
  • Quality of Life Conferences (EUCOM)
  • Command-Sponsored Town Halls

Principals and teachers are also welcomed and encouraged to provide their comments about our initiatives and programs.

Teacher Avenues of Input:

  • Teachers always have avenues for input by talking with their principals.
  • They also have avenues of communication through their union/association representatives.
  • Teachers are representatives on each of the nine Task Groups we are currently operating as part of our efforts toward continuous improvement. These task groups are addressing the areas of Virtual School, Advanced Placement, Assessment, PreK-12 Literacy, Mathematics, Administrator Evaluation, System Wide Professional Development, Professional Technical Studies, and Counseling.
  • Employee Satisfaction Surveys
  • Direct communication (e-mail, phone) with the Director
