The Sure Start program is thriving in the Italy District. The DoDEA wide program, which is similar to Head Start in the United States, provides school readiness education to a growing number of children ages 3 to 4 years. In the Italy District, the Sure Start program is offered at most elementary schools. Each program is staffed by a professionally certified teacher as well as teacher aides. A few of the Italy District schools coordinate the Sure Start program between a number of teachers
which allows the sharing of resources in a 'team teaching' environment. The Sure Start program in the Italy District prepares students to enter elementary school, as cited in DoDEA Strategic Goal #1. DoDEA works in close coordination with the Military Services to expand the Sure Start program.

An extra pair of hands is always available in the Sure Start program. The extra hands are needed in all aspects of the program ranging from reading readiness activities, to healthy, midday snacks, to playground fun. The Sure Start program makes a significant contribution to military service personnel and is another example of how the DoD schools are integrated into the military community.
