New Goals Panel Study of Department
of Defense Schools
Provides Lessons for State and Local School Systems
DOD Schools are a Model for the Nation
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Education Goals Panel
(NEGP) will release on Tuesday, October 9, a new study of the successful
Department of Defense (DOD) school system and its practices that could
benefit state and local school systems. The DOD school system is one
of the best in the nation as measured by student performance and its
narrow achievement gap between white and non-white students. Among DOD
practices recommended in the study are improved strategic planning,
accountability and smaller schools.
The study, March Toward Excellence: Schools Success and Minority Student
Achievement in Department of Defense Schools was conducted by the Peabody
Center for Education Policy at Vanderbilt University.
Advance copies of the study are
available for media representatives agreeing to honor the embargo,
which lifts Tuesday, October 9, at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Time.
Available for interviews are John Barth of the National Education Goals
Panel and the principal authors of the study, Claire Smrekar and James
Guthrie, both of the Peabody Center for Education Policy at Vanderbilt
University.
For interviews, an advance copy of the study, and further information,

About the National Education Goals Panel
Created in July 1990, the National Education Goals Panel
is a bipartisan body consisting of an equal number of Republicans and
Democrats from the federal and state levels of government. The Panel
is made up of eight governors, four members of Congress, four state
legislators and two members appointed by the President. The eight National
Education Goals call for greater levels of: student achievement; high
school completion; teacher education and professional development; parental
participation in the schools; adult literacy and lifelong learning;
and safe, disciplined, and alcoholand-drug-free schools. The Goals also
call for all children to be ready to learn by the time they start school
and for US students to be first in the world in mathematics and science
achievement.
