About NAEP

NAEP is the premier benchmark for comparing student performance across states. NAEP is managed by the National Center for Education Statistics, a component of the Institute for Education Sciences at the U.S. Department of Education. Under the No Child Left Behind legislation, all states are required to participate in the NAEP reading and mathematics assessments. Participation in the NAEP science test was voluntary and 45 states and jurisdictions chose to participate. NAEP has also conducted trial assessments in ten large urban school districts, including New York City, Charlotte, Atlanta, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Diego. NAEP provides state level results for grades four and eight, and national results for grades four, eight, and twelve.
