DoDEA National Distinguished Principal of the Year

Emily Marsh

ARLINGTON, VA—The Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) proudly announces that Emily K. Marsh has been selected as a 2005 National Distinguished Elementary School Principal of the Year. Dr. Marsh is currently the principal at Devers Elementary School in Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

The National Distinguished Principals (NDP) Program is jointly sponsored by the United States Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). The Program is designed to recognize excellence among both elementary and middle school principals. Principals selected for recognition have been principals for at least five years, and demonstrate strong educational leadership by setting high expectations for school staff and students.

One principal is chosen annually from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia. Principals representing private K-8 schools, Department of Defense Dependents' Schools, and the U.S. Department of State Overseas Schools are also recognized. Public school principals are nominated by peers in their home states, and the final selection for each state's NDP is made by the NAESP state affiliate. Honorees from private schools and overseas schools are selected by special committees.

With 14 years of experience as a principal, Dr. Marsh earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from Auburn University, Master of Science degree in Reading Education from the University of Texas and her Doctorate of Education in Curriculum and Teaching from Auburn University. Dr Marsh enjoys "being in classrooms to observe lessons, talk with children, and often lead classroom activities".

Community Superintendent, Joel Hansen notes that Dr. Marsh is dedicated to making improvements at Devers Elementary School. "Planning monitoring, celebrating, successes and revisiting instructional areas that need improvement are evident in the school improvement plans that Dr. Marsh coordinates".

"We're very proud of the work that Dr. Marsh has accomplished and we know that she has good things in store for her future students and staff" said Dr. Joe Tafoya, Director of DoDEA.
