2004 DoDEA Assistant Principal of the Year

ARLINGTON, VA–September 15, 2004–Each year, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) proudly participates in a national program that recognizes outstanding assistant principals at the middle and high school levels. The 2004 DoDEA high school assistant principal of the year is Ms. Susan Page of Aviano (Italy) High School.

A commanding General is quoted as saying, "I have never seen a more capable, professional, and dedicated assistant principal than Ms. Susan Page." His endorsement is echoed by parents and teachers at Aviano High School. In her fourth year as an assistant principal, Susan is described as being an educational leader, mentor, role model, and a person who champions what is best for students. She began her teaching career in 1984 at Bishop Baumgartner Junior High School in the Guam Private Schools as an English teacher. Her initial DoDEA assignment was as a 4 th grade teacher at Naples (Italy) Elementary School in 1993. Prior to her current assignment, Susan served as the assistant principal at Vilseck (Germany) High School.

One of Susan's most notable accomplishments at Aviano High School is the initiation of the school's "Ladder to Success" program. The process provides clear direction for interventions, including classroom modifications, quarterly letters to parents, and lab referrals for assist at-risk students. In the process, interventions for low-performing students were systemized, and planning time for teachers initiated.

Susan also initiated "Project Learn," a program that utilizes members of the teaching staff and support personnel as tutors. The project was developed and is maintained with the assistance of community resources. As a result of the school-wide effort, the number of students scoring in the bottom quartile on standardized tests has been reduced. Additionally, she initiated a freshman and Newcomer Orientation program to ease the transition of the school's freshman, and a farewell session for departing students.

Susan is a member of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), Federal Managers Association and Phi Delta Kappa. She received her undergraduate degree from UCLA and her graduate degree from the University of California, Riverside.
