IMMEDIATE RELEASE Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss Selected to Lead
ARLINGTON, VA—DoDEA Director Dr. Joseph Tafoya today announced the formal approval by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management of Dr. Elizabeth Middlemiss as the Associate Director of DoDEA for Education. This appointment, although just officially announced, was effective as of October 21, 2001. Dr. Middlemiss, who has held this position in an acting capacity since January and who previously was the acting Deputy Director DoDEA for DDESS/Cuba, will have responsibility for instruction and the overall educational program in DoDEA's 225 schools. In her more than thirty years of varied experience in the educational field, Dr. Middlemiss has worked as teacher, assistant principal, principal, counselor, staff developer and in a number of senior administrative positions in school systems in Maryland, Georgia and the DoD domestic schools. Her experience includes activities at the state, regional and national levels as a member and officer in professional associations and educational organizations. Dr. Middlemiss' distinguished career in public education includes leadership roles in curriculum alignment, educational research, mentoring, and assessment. She has been responsible for such varied achievements as the implementation of a multi - media technology program, creation of a Parent Academy, the development of criterion referenced tests, the establishment of guidelines for school volunteers, the oversight and growth of federal grant programs, the implementation of a modular multi-level staff development program, and the system-wide realignment of curricula. She also has wide experience working successfully with a broad range of collective bargaining units, as well as with local special interest groups and the media. "Dr. Middlemiss brings exactly the right combination of strengths to this critical role," stated Dr. Tafoya. "She's what you might call an 'educator's educator.' She is decisive and forward thinking, and has the greatest respect for teachers and teaching. For all her years of leading change in schools, she's never forgotten what it is to be a teacher or a learner. She'll definitely be on the front line of putting the "e' back in DoDEA." After earning a bachelor's degree in European History, Dr. Middlemiss went on to earn an M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance, and an AS-5 Certificate, an Ed.
