AFRTS News Plus - DoDEA New School Year

[Transcript]

Petty Officer Quinn Lyton: This is News Plus. The Department of Defense Education Activity intends for its five-year Community Strategic Plan to improve the way education practices were conducted in the past. DoDEAâs director says the best educational practices happen at the school level where parents, teachers, and administrators work together.

Dr. Joseph Tafoya: I think in the past few years there was too much of a tendency to run these programs out of headquarters and it's my goal and my direction that, in fact, that these resources be placed out there in the field.

Lyton: DoDEA has already put more resources in the field in Europe. The eight school districts there have been re-organized to six this year.

Tafoya: Through that they've generated 45 positions and they're putting those positions back in the schools as middle-grade gifted teachers, teachers that teach gifted kids in the middle grades. They're funding nurses now in every school.

Lyton: He says the Pacific theatre is different with only three school districts, but they're also looking to make changes there as well.

Tafoya: We're working to provide in headquarters some ways to address their staffing needs so they, too, can have those same kinds of things, because we want equity across the system.
