George Yorns:This is News Plus. A few minutes ago, we told you how the Department of Defense Education Activity plans to assess student progress with more testing. DoDEA officials say it's important for parents to understand the tests are not high-stakes tests or exams required for promotion from grade to grade.

Dr. Janet Rope: I really want to assure parents that the point of this increased amount of testing is to get good, solid information about how their child is doing, what their strengths are, what their weaknesses are. This is not high-stakes. None of the tests will be high-stakes tests in themselves.

Yorns: While the tests may help gauge student progress, DoDEA officials' say there's no substitute for what happens in the classroom.

Rope: The really important tests are the ones that are done on a daily basis in the classroom. After all, the teacher is the one that sees the child every day of the school year. So the feedback from the teacher is by far the most valuable information parents can get.

Yorns: You can learn more about school assessment and other Department of Defense Education Activity programs at this website. Here, you'll find information for teachers, parents, and students.
