The White House's Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program, administered by the National Science Foundation, bestows the nation's highest honor for mathematics and science teaching in grades kindergarten through 12. The program recognizes those talented educators who exhibit outstanding teaching and leadership skills. This year's Presidential awardees—representing every state, the District of Columbia, U.S. territories, and the U.S. Department of Defense schools—were selected from more than 600 nominees. After an initial selection process at the state or territorial level, a national panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators sends its recommendations of up to four candidates from each state or jurisdiction to the White House, which makes the final selections.

Each 2001 Presidential Award recipient receives a $7,500 grant to their school, and a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend the ceremony at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and to participate in the award week activities.
