Performance Task

Standard(s):

 

E1b.4-Comprehension

By the end of the year, we expect first graders to be able to:

·         Retell the story or

·        Tell what the book is about ( if the child chooses to retell the story instead of reading it).

E1c.1-Independent and Assisted Reading

By the end of the year, we expect first graders to be able to:

·         Discuss at least one of these books with another student or group.

E1c.3-Discussing Books

By the end of the year, we expect first graders to be able to:

·         Refer explicitly to parts of the text when presenting or defending a claim.

·         Attempt to explain why their interpretation of a book is valid.

·         Read aloud. (if the child chooses to read the book instead of retelling the story)

 

The Task:

Think about your favorite books. (This serves as the anticipatory set. The teacher will establish the amount of time given to this task.)

 

Pick one of your favorite books to share with a small group of 4-5 classmates.  You can either read the book to them or retell the story in your own words.  Remember to show  pictures that go with the story and match what you are saying. Your classmates will listen and ask any questions or make comments later. Record your reading or retelling on a cassette tape or a video tape.

 

After you have read or retold the story, you will need to tell your classmates:

1.      What was the most important part of the story.

2.      What made you like this book so much.

3.      Which characters of the story were important.

4.      What you thought about the ending.

5.      Why you recommend this book to your classmates.

 

Include the following discussion on your recording:

Then ask your classmates if they have any questions or have anything they want to say about the story. When responding to classmates, remember to look at the person who spoke to you and use your best speaking voice. 

 

Note: For submission to DoDEA for commentary on student work, please submit cassette or video of:     

1. student reading / retelling

2. discussion  with classmates

1.      The student is able to summarize the book when reading or retelling the story.

2.      The student is able to explain to classmates why s/he liked the book.

3.      The student is able to explain which characters are important and why.

4.      The student is able to explain why s/he thinks others should read the book.

5.      The student uses appropriate speaking voice and maintains eye contact with group.
