Standard(s):
By the end of the year, we
expect second grade students to:
·
recognize and be able to talk about organizing structures.
·
combine information from two different parts of the text.
·
Infer cause and
effect relationships that are not stated explicitly.
You have been asked to write about your life as a
second grader for the class yearbook.
You are interested in learning more about how to organize your story in
terms of the people and the things that happened to you during this year. You want the reader to clearly see how
events in your life are connected.
(Teacher
models the following first by reading several books and making a chart. Then children read books and make their own
charts working with a partner. Each student will then be asked to complete a
chart independently )
Chose a favorite series of
stories that have the same character or characters throughout the series such
as Mercer Mayer or Marc Brown books. Working with
a partner, make one chart that will allow you to follow the main character and
the story line from three to five books.
After reading each story from the series, enter on the chart:
·
the main character’s name
·
actions taken by main character
·
reasons for the actions.
Be sure to share ideas with your partner as you make
your chart together.
Now, working by yourself, make a different chart by
making yourself the main character.
Think about three to five events in your life and the actions they caused
you to take. What were the reasons for
your actions? Complete your chart. Use
the chart to help you organize the story of your life in second grade and share
your story with your parent or parents.
Note: When submitting work to DoDEA for written commentary
please include both charts (identify chart completed independently) along with
a list of books read.
