Performance Task

2-3 final

Standard(s):

Reading

E1C-3:  Discussing Books

In classroom and small group discussions of their reading and of books read to them, we expect students finishing second grade to:

·         recognize genre features and compare works by different authors in the same genre.

  • discuss recurring themes across works.
  • paraphrase or summarize what another speaker has said and check whether the original speaker accepts the paraphrase.
  • sometimes challenge another speaker on whether facts are accurate including reference to the text.
  • sometimes challenge another speaker on logic or inference.
  • ask other speakers to provide supporting information or details.
  • politely correct someone who paraphrases or interprets his or her ideas incorrectly.

Writing
E2b-4:  Producing and Responding to Literature

By the end of the year, we expect second-grade students to:

  • make a plausible claim about what they have read.
  • make connections between the text and their own ideas and lives.

The Task:

You have been selected to represent a group of second graders on a reading panel. Each member of this panel will present a fantasy book selected by their group as the most popular book read by second graders. Your job is to persuade the audience that the book your group has chosen is indeed the most popular fantasy book read by second graders.  Following each presentation other panel members will respond and ask questions.  After all members have presented, the audience will prioritize, by vote, the books from the most popular to the least popular read.

Review the book that you will present in behalf of your group.  Be prepared to:

·        summarize the key events

·        give reasons why this is the most popular fantasy book in your classroom

·        refer to parts of the book in your presentation that are of particular interest

·        make sure your presentation is sensible and facts are correct.

Meet with members of your group to review your presentation.  Each member will present and receive feedback.  Revise your presentation before presenting to the class.

During the presentations be prepared to:

·        summarize what others have said

·        challenge other speakers if you think something they say does not make sense or is not correct

·        ask speakers to provide details

·        correct someone who misinterprets or misquotes you.

Following the panel presentations and the voting by the audience, you will make a T-Chart where you compare two books presented.  Include facts and your opinions about the books on your chart.  Make a connection between each book and an event or happening in your own life.
