E2b-2 Informing Others: Report or Information Writing

By the end of the year, we expect second-grade students to:

  • have an obvious organizational structure.
  • communicate big ideas, insights, or theories that have been elaborated on or illustrated through facts, details, quotations, statistics, and information.
  • usually have a concluding sentence or section.
  • use diagrams, charts, or illustrations as appropriate to the text.

The Task:

Our 2nd graders have been asked by the Smithsonian Museum to prepare an informational booklet on dinosaurs.  This booklet will be placed with the dinosaur models on the Smithsonian Web site to help children around the world understand the exhibits.

In a small group of three, make a chart of all the things you know about dinosaurs. Discuss in your group how to organize a booklet, using the information from your chart.   Then make a second chart that groups your information into three or four categories.

You are now ready to make your own booklet.  Use the information from the group to create an information booklet. Check the information to make sure that your facts are correct using books, the Internet, or other sources.  In your booklet, use pictures that you have drawn, pictures from magazines, charts, and graphs to help your reader understand the information you are sharing.

Return to your small group and share your book.  How clear is the information to the group?  Use the group’s feedback to revise and edit your booklet.
