4 Folk Tales
While reading four folks tales, collect information in a journal about some of the critical features of folk tales. The following is a suggestion of some areas in which you might collect information:
-characters with magical powers
-animals with human characteristics
-problems solved by extraordinary help
-magical endings
Write down any specific
and folk tale unique sentence structures that appear in the four folk tales.
(“In a land far far away”, “Once there was a gentle man jaguar and…”) You will
be able to use these notes when you write your own folk tale.
After reading the four folk tales, complete a matrix (see below) comparing the features of the folk tales (i.e. characters with magical powers, animals with human characteristics, problems solved by extraordinary help, etc). Use your journal notes to complete this task.
Writing
Write a folk tale using the critical features found in your matrix. You will need to make sure you develop characters with magical powers and develop a plot that has a magical ending. The folk tale needs to include descriptive details and dialogue. Reproduce any sentence structures found in any of the four folk tales you read. Use all the steps of the writing process. Final product is published using Microsoft Word or other document publishing software. Also, be sure to use the “spell check” to check your spelling and keyboarding entries.
Note: If submitting to DoDEA for written commentary please include:
*List of folk tales used in this task
*Completed matrix
*Listing of critical features of folk tales that students included in their folk tale.
*Draft, Revised copy, final publication
