The Task:

Modeled after the DoDEA Writing Assessment

Fourth grade is now taking part in a DoDEA Writing Assessment.  This is new for fourth grade so it will be a good idea to practice ahead of time so students will know what to expect during the actual assessment.  In this simulation, students are to be given a writing prompt and have three days to complete the assignment following the former DoDEA Writing Assessment guidelines.  Your practice prompt and directions are as follows:

PROMPT:

This year we will publish and distribute a weekly class newsletter. Each week the newsletter will feature a “student of the week”.  This is very exciting and it will a great honor to be chosen as the first student selected to be in the newspaper. How are you going to persuade the editor to select you? Write a news article about yourself, sharing at least three pieces of information about you. Information can include items such as a description of your family, your pets, type of books you like to read, your favorite subject, and future goals or aspirations.

DIRECTIONS:

This is a three-day performance activity.

·        Day One:  You will be given the writing prompt. You will be given 5 minutes to reflect on the writing situation.  After this time you will be asked to get together in groups for 30 minutes to brainstorm ideas about important facts to share about yourself.  This will be the only time that you are allowed to work with a group.

·        Day Two:  You will be allotted 35 minutes to prepare your writing draft.

·        Day Three:  You will be allotted 35 minutes to edit and revise your work for the final copy. You must turn in your draft along with your edited and final copies.

Note: If submitting for DoDEA written commentary please send copy of brainstorming work and the draft, edited and final copies of work
