The Task:

Modeled after the DoDEA Writing Assessment

Every year certain grades take part in the DoDEA Writing Assessment.  This is new for many students so it will be a good idea to do practice every year so students will know what to expect during the actual assessment.  Students are given a writing prompt and have three days to complete the assignment following DoDEA directions.  Your practice prompt and directions are as follows:

PROMPT:

NASA has announced that the next international shuttle mission will include a student from next year’s sixth grade class.  You have aspirations of becoming an astronaut so want to be included in this mission.  To be selected as the student representative, you need to write a letter to the chairman of NASA to convince him why you would make a good sixth grade ambassador in space.  As a student ambassador to NASA, you will be required to explain your experiences to the school, community and the world upon your return.  Follow the guidelines on how to write a persuasive text, including appropriate information and arguments on why you would be the best applicant.  If selected you will participate in many television interviews before and upon your return, so how you present yourself in this application is most important.

DIRECTIONS:

This is a three-day performance activity.

·        Day One:  You will be given the writing prompt. You will be given 5 minutes to reflect on the writing situation.  After this time you will be asked to get together in groups for 30 minutes to brainstorm ideas about important facts to share about yourself.  This will be the only time that you are allowed to work with a group.

·        Day Two:  You will be allotted 35 minutes to prepare your writing draft.

·        Day Three:  You will be allotted 35 minutes to edit and revise your work for the final copy. You must turn in your draft along with your final copy.

Note: For submission to DoDEA for commentaries on student work, submit the draft along with the edited and final copy.
