                E1d.3  analyzes the arguments and positions advanced and the evidence offered in

               support of them, or formulates an argument and offers evidence to support it;

                E1d.5  identifies or uses commonly used persuasive techniques.

 

Writing

 

E2a:  The student produces a report that:

E2a.2:  develops a controlling idea that conveys a perspective on the subject;

E2a.3:  creates an organizing structure appropriate to a specific purpose, audience and context;

E2a.4:  includes appropriate facts and details;

E2a.5:  excludes extraneous and inappropriate information;

E2a.6:  uses a range of appropriate strategies, such as providing facts and details, describing or analyzing the subject, narrating a relevant anecdote, comparing and contrasting, naming, and explaining benefits or limitations;

 

Speaking, Listening, and Viewing

E3c.4:  develops several main points relating to a single thesis;

Performance Task:

Members of the student council have been asked to review the school discipline policy manual and provide input to the principal and the school advisory panel (or school board).  The advisory panel is interested in the areas in which you agree with the current policies as well as any recommendations for changes.  You and your fellow student council members will have two weeks to complete the following:

 

1.        Read the manual thoroughly and reach a consensus on the areas in which you agree as well as the recommendations for change.

2.        Prepare a questionnaire and interview at least 20 students, 3 parents, 5 teachers, and 1 counselor at each grade level.  Your questions should focus on the effectiveness of the policy as it is now written, as well as ideas for changes.

3.        Read other public documents (e.g., discipline policies from other schools, post or base youth policies, youth services policies on conduct) for the purpose of comparison and to stimulate the thinking of the student council members.

4.        Summarize the data from the questionnaire and other sources. 

  • Formulate recommendations for change based upon findings. 
  • Present your results to your classmates.
  •  Ask your classmates for additional feedback and input. 
  • Use graphs, charts or other visual tools, and persuasive techniques, to enhance your presentation.

5.        Now:  Reflect on the work and presentation by:

  • Writing a one-page summary analyzing the arguments and positions advanced in your presentation as well as its effectiveness.
